Building a Chicken Coop

Well, we are finally done building our chicken coop for the most part. Britton woke up early on Saturday and put the shingles on the top and built the nesting boxes. He had the already done, but with the crazy rainy/snowy weather we had put off moving it to the backyard until today.

We used the lawnmower as a dolly to transport it from the garage to our backyard because I am a wuss and couldn’t carry it. Then we needed to paint the plywood white to help protect it from the elements including the sprinkler system. So we went for a bike ride down to Ace and picked up a little can of exterior paint. We sat down to paint and were done in about 15 minutes. When I saw the white blank canvas, I decided to make it a cuter chicken coop with a custom paint job. Voila! Not bad for a day’s work. What do you think? We can’t wait till the baby chicks are old enough to live there with the Leghorn.

Chicken Coop Basics in Leon, Iowa

More often than not these standardized designs are created of fast grown timber - come the initial decrease of rainfall they swell, leaving you either fortifying a doorway that won't close, or ripping the door furnishings off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking citizens. The very first warm and comfortable day implies the hardwood dries out and splits, the felt roofing bubbles and also boils, and also come nightfall the chickens refuse to enter. This is not because of their frustration at the decrease of their once eye-catching residential property but due to the fact that the hovel is currently a place for, and most likely abounding, the poultry keeper's bane, red mite. Add the fact that it said on the blurb that it would certainly fit 4 big hens when that stocking density was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, as well as just what are you left with? A few joints as well as some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to 4 birds must cost you around ₤ 300 though this could depend upon whether you choose for a complimentary standing house or one with a run connected. Assuming you are varying your birds in a large area as well as the pop hole door allows sufficient for the type you keep, then the main requirements of housing come down to three factors which will specify the variety of birds your house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and air flow. A lot of types of chicken will perch when they visit roost at night, this perch should ideally be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off sides so the foot rests comfortably on it. The perch must be above the nest box entrance as chickens will likewise normally look for the highest point to perch. A perch lower than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they produce one of the most poo) resulting in soiled eggs the list below day. They should not nonetheless be so high off the floor of your home that leg injuries could possibly take place when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens require about 20cm of perch each (in little types this is certainly less), plus if greater than one perch is installed in your home they ought to be more than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Ideally your house ought to have a least one nest box for every single 3 birds and also these ought to be off the ground and also in the darkest location of the house. The house must have adequate air flow: without it then condensation will develop every night, also in the chilliest of climate. Realize, ventilation deals with the concept of warm air leaving through a high space drawing cooler air in from a lower void - it's not a collection of holes on contrary wall surfaces of your home and also at the very same level, this is exactly what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run affixed after that the factors above are still real, however you must also think about the run dimension. The EU maximum legal stocking thickness for a totally free array bird is (and let's face it, one of the motivations for maintaining some chickens in your home is potentially improved or better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird each 4m made even. Take a close take a look at some of the bargain residences - it could well be the house has the right perches, correct ventilation and also sufficient nest boxes for a practical variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to spend the day on? And so as the saying goes, "you obtain what you spend for". You could think you've got hold of a deal, but you and your group could rue the day you did. Purchase the ideal house and also it will last for a few decades, if not longer given the appropriate treatment. In the long run your fowl as well as your poultry keeping experience will be considerably the better for it.
