Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

What to look for when buying a chicken coop in Cambridge, Iowa With the huge rise in poultry keeping there has actually been a just as large rise in the variety of poultry paraphernalia on sale. Fowl real estate is an instance in point. It's likewise a classic instance of the good old bandwagon being got on as various would-be chicken housing specialists peddle a selection of holiday accommodation asserting to be the excellent option to your chicken real estate requirements. Commonly the rate looks eye-catching, the house looks desirable, hell also the clean-cut family members standing there feeding the chickens look appealing. Certainly they know a professional chicken house when they see one? There are lots of low-cost and nasty cages flooding the marketplace. Most of the time these standardized models are created of fast grown wood - come the first decrease of rain they swell, leaving you either fortifying a door that will not shut, or tearing the doorway furniture off in a vain effort to launch the squawking inhabitants. The initial cozy day indicates the wood dries out as well as cracks, the really felt roof bubbles and boils, as well as come nightfall the chickens choose not to go in. This is not due to their frustration at the decrease of their once appealing home however due to the fact that the hovel is currently a sanctuary for, as well as probably crawling with, the poultry caretaker's bane, red mite. Add on that it stated on the blurb that it would suit 4 big chickens when that stocking thickness was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you entrusted? A couple of hinges and also some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to four birds need to cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this can depend on whether you elect for a totally free standing house or one with a run affixed. Assuming you are ranging your birds in a huge space and the pop opening door is big enough for the type you keep, then the main demands of housing boil down to three points which will certainly define the variety of birds the house will hold; perches, nest boxes and ventilation. Most breeds of chicken will certainly perch when they go to roost during the night, this perch ought to ideally be 5-8cm large with smoothed off sides so the foot rests pleasantly on it. The perch needs to be above the nest box entrance as chickens will certainly also normally look for the highest point to perch. A perch lower than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they produce the most poo) bring about soiled eggs the following day. They should not however be so high off the floor of your house that leg injuries could occur when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens need about 20cm of perch each (in small breeds this is clearly much less), plus if more than one perch is set up in the house they should be more than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Ideally your house ought to have a the very least one nest box for every three birds and these need to be off the ground and in the darkest location of your home. Your house needs to have ample ventilation: without it after that condensation will develop every night, even in the coldest of weather condition. Know, ventilation deals with the concept of warm air leaving with a high void drawing cooler air in from a lower space - it's not a collection of holes on contrary walls of your home as well as at the exact same degree, this is just what's known as a draught. If you have a house with a run affixed after that the factors above are still real, but you must additionally take into consideration the run dimension. The EU optimum legal stocking density for a totally free array bird is (as well as allow's face it, among the inspirations for keeping some chickens at home is possibly enhanced or much better well-being) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's optimal one bird each 4m squared. Take a close look at several of the deal residences - it could well be your house has the ideal perches, correct air flow as well as enough nest boxes for a sensible variety of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? And so as the stating goes, "you get what you spend for". You may believe you've got a bargain, yet you as well as your flock can rue the day you did. Acquisition the right house and also it will certainly last for a few decades, if not longer provided the correct treatment. Ultimately your fowl and also your fowl maintaining experience will be a lot the far better for it.
