This week our family had our first trip away in over a year – long overdue I must say. We took the girls to a farm stay so they could experience the fresh air and we could relax on the deck enjoying the peace and quiet and lovely scenery. The farm we visited is located at beautiful Port Stevens, NSW, a popular beach holiday destination. We went once before a couple of years ago and decided to return because the accommodation is so kid-friendly and there is plenty of hands-on opportunity for the kids to help out with all the different animals. Naturally we packed a few basic art and craft supplies to keep them busy at other times of the day and one of the things we made are these cute & easy Rock Chicks.
While at the farm the girls held and petted real baby chicks, collected the eggs (very popular with my two), held a large snake, gave the pig (named Bacon #19) a back-scratch, rode on the tractor and also collected some beautiful spotty feathers and large round rocks which is what inspired us to make the rock chicks. Before I get straight into the craft here are a few pictures of the fun the girls got up to at the farm stay…
To make the Rock chicks
We washed our collection of rocks in the sink to get all the dirt off and left them to dry.
Once completely dry, we stuck on googly eyes, the feathers and a simple yellow paper beak – and that’s all!
They make great souvenirs, and handy paper weight too.

Baby Chicks Types in
Sharpsburg, Iowa
Thumbing through a baby chickens for sale in Sharpsburg Iowa
catalog is a yearly traditions in many houses. My kids and I eagerly await
the Murray McMurray Hatchery catalog. We love looking at all the cool and
different chicken breeds available. Catalogs are free so head on over to
their site and request one if you are interested.
Typically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds
and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs
that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2
pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros
and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in
Sharpsburg Iowa * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large
variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best
selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens
available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of
both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money
and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose
all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on
chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the
breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Sharpsburg
Iowa * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell
out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you
are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall
before their orders sell out.

Sharpsburg, Iowa
Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries
will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is
necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put
in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce
enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to
buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you
choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship
and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in
Sharpsburg Iowa is easy and has always been a very pleasant
experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks
but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all
those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait
was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Sharpsburg,
Iowa Baby chicks are quite
cute and also
challenging to resist,
however it's best to prepare for their
arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first
by collecting not just the
right products, but
also the proper
expertise to look after
them. Raising baby chicks is fairly
straightforward, you just should offer them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable
environment Plenty of food and water Interest and also
love Environment Your habitat could be an easy box, aquarium,
pet cat service provider, or guinea
porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as
coverings (without any loose
strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks utilize straw over paper.
Note: Avoid using just
paper or various other slipper
surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow
misshapen. You likewise need
something to provide food and also
water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water
dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar
lid for food and a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks get
older you can present a perch
right into the environment to obtain them
trained on perching. Heat To
keep your chicks warm you need to
provide them with a heat source.
This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt
light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a
hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat
bulb likewise function extremely well (my
recommendation). Chicks require this
warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is
changed with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The newly
hatched require a temperature
between 90 and 100 degrees,
as well as weekly this can
be minimized by
roughly 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource should get on just one side of the cage
to allow chicks an array of
temperatures. The chicks are your finest
thermostat- if they are hiding in the
opposite edge of your heat
lamp, you have to
decrease the temperature level. If
they are smothering each other under the
heat (not just cuddling),
you should add some heat.
Housekeeping
Cleanliness is essential as
well as it keeps your chicks healthy and
balanced. Make certain to alter
the bed linens
typically as well as
consistently supply clean
food and water Food and water.
Chicks grow extremely quick
which requires lots of clean
food and water. Give
sufficient whatsoever times as well
as examine
frequently to prevent thirsty as well as
hungry chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the
first two months, after that
switch to a grower food (~ 17 %
protein) for another 2 months,
then to a slightly
reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed
(if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want
to obtain a head start on taking
dirt bathrooms, while others will not use up that activity up until they are
older. If you have the room in your chick
unit, introduce a tray of sand or
filth for them to wash in.
Interest and love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will more than likely bond with you and
not run away as grownups. Second, if you
analyze your chicks daily and also
see their behavior, you could
catch health problem or other troubles previously. Keep an
eye out for wheezing, limping, or
various other unhealthy
indicators. Make sure to
likewise consider
their poop, as diarrhea can bring about matted feathers as well
as stopped up cloaca.
Lastly, it is very
important to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the
littlest chick obtaining picked
on. Empty nest syndrome So your
chicks are currently fully feathery
and its time for them to leave the
security of your house
as well as move outside into a
coop. Have a look at our
part on chicken coops to get more information
regarding coops and also
proper cage environments.
