Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Chicken Coop Plans For 20 Chickens in Mount Vernon, Indiana

Generally these mass produced designs are built of rapid grown timber - come the first decrease of rainfall they swell, leaving you either fortifying a doorway that will not shut, or tearing the door furnishings off in a vain effort to launch the squawking occupants. The initial warm day implies the hardwood dries out and cracks, the really felt roofing system bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the hens refuse to enter. This is not as a result of their dissatisfaction at the decline of their as soon as desirable property however due to the fact that the hovel is currently a place for, and also probably crawling with, the fowl caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add that it stated on the blurb that it would certainly fit 4 big chickens when that equipping thickness was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and exactly what are you left with? A number of joints as well as some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to 4 birds ought to cost you in the region of ₤ 300 though this can depend on whether you choose for a complimentary standing house or one with a run attached. Thinking you are varying your birds in a huge room and also the pop hole door allows enough for the type you keep, after that the primary requirements of housing come down to three factors which will specify the number of birds your home will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and also ventilation. Most types of chicken will perch when they go to roost during the night, this perch ought to preferably be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off sides so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch needs to be higher than the nest box access as chickens will certainly also normally search for the highest point to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they create one of the most poo) causing stained eggs the list below day. They shouldn't however be so high off the flooring of your home that leg injuries might happen when the bird comes down in the early morning. Chickens require about 20cm of perch each (in little breeds this is obviously less), plus if more than one perch is installed in your house they should be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their neighbors however are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Preferably the house needs to have a the very least one nest box for each three birds and these ought to be off the ground as well as in the darkest location of your house. Your house needs to have appropriate ventilation: without it then condensation will accumulate every evening, even in the chilliest of weather. Be aware, air flow deals with the concept of warm air leaving through a high void attracting cooler air in from a lower space - it's not a set of holes on other walls of your home and also at the same level, this is what's called a draught. If you have a house with a run affixed then the factors above are still true, but you should additionally think about the run size. The EU optimum lawful stocking density for a complimentary array bird is (as well as let's encounter it, among the inspirations for keeping some hens in your home is perhaps boosted or much better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m settled. Take a close take a look at several of the deal homes - it could well be the house has the right perches, appropriate air flow and also sufficient nest boxes for a sensible variety of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to invest the day on? And so as the saying goes, "you get what you spend for". You could think you've grabbed a deal, yet you as well as your flock might rue the day you did. Purchase the right house as well as it will last for a couple of years, if not longer offered the correct treatment. Eventually your fowl and your chicken keeping encounter will be a lot the far better for it.
