A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Sailor Springs, Illinois Baby chicks are very cute and tough to stand up to, but it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the correct materials, however likewise the appropriate understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you simply should supply them with the following: A clean and warm and comfortable environment A lot of food as well as water Focus as well as love Habitat Your environment can be a simple box, fish tank, cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without any loose strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You additionally require something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you could introduce a perch into the environment to get them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you need to provide them with a warmth resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also function very well (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The recently hatched require a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 levels, as well as each week this can be decreased by around 5 levels approximately. The heat resource need to get on just one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your warmth light, you have to reduce the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not just cuddling), you have to include some warmth. Housekeeping Sanitation is crucial and it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to transform the bed linen usually as well as always supply tidy food and also water Food and also water. Chicks grow quite fast which calls for a lot of clean food and also water. Give sufficient whatsoever times and inspect usually to avoid dehydrated and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dust baths, while others won't take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will more than likely bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as watch their habits, you could catch illness or various other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other undesirable indications. Make sure to also consider their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted feathers as well as obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to watch out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery and its time for them to leave the security of your house and relocate outside right into a coop. Have a look at our area on chicken cages for more information regarding coops and proper coop environments.
