Raising Cornish Cross Chickens – Week 4

Our 10 Cornish Cross meat chickens are now a month old…..one more month to go!

You can read why we chose this breed and see pictures of their growth on these posts:  – –

They are outside full time now and love to munch on the grass!

They are still much more active than I expected.  I have read that all they do is stand or lay down at the feeders and eat all day.  Ours are not like that at all, maybe it’s because they have room to run and fresh grass to eat, or maybe they just haven’t got to that point yet?

They are ugly little buggers and not very bright!  I weighed one a couple days ago and it was almost 2 pounds.  They are going through the feed pretty quickly now, I think it’s going to cost more than I originally expected to feed them.  But I also expected to loose a couple and so far no casualties.  The five that my mom took to her house are also doing very well.  Thanks for following along on our meat chicken journey.

Pros of buying baby chicks in Patterson Illinois * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Patterson Illinois is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Patterson, Illinois Baby chicks are extremely charming and difficult to withstand, but it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the right materials, but also the appropriate understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you merely have to supply them with the following: A clean and also warm and comfortable habitat Plenty of food as well as water Attention and also love Habitat Your environment could be an easy box, aquarium, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of only newspaper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You also require something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Also, as the chicks age you could present a perch into the environment to get them educated on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you need to provide them with a heat resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function very well (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can take up to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 levels, and also weekly this can be reduced by roughly 5 levels or so. The warmth resource need to be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your heat light, you should minimize the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not just snuggling), you need to include some heat. House cleaning Cleanliness is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to transform the bedding typically and consistently offer tidy food and water Food and also water. Chicks grow very fast which needs lots of clean food as well as water. Supply enough whatsoever times and also check typically to prevent thirsty and starving chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that change to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking filth baths, while others will not occupy that activity until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Interest and also love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will probably bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and watch their actions, you can capture health problem or other troubles earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or various other unhealthy signs. Be sure to likewise take a look at their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted plumes and also clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to look out for social problems, such as the littlest chick getting teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now totally feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as move outside right into a coop. Look into our part on chicken cages to find out more regarding coops and proper cage habitats.
