A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Marine Illinois * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Marine Illinois is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Marine, Illinois Baby chicks are really charming and also challenging to stand up to, yet it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by gathering not just the proper products, however likewise the proper understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably straightforward, you just need to provide them with the following: A clean and cozy habitat Plenty of food and water Interest and also love Habitat Your habitat could be a basic box, fish tank, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (with no loose strings!) to start, and also after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using only newspaper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You likewise need something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could present a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you have to supply them with a warmth resource. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb likewise work effectively (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can take up to 2 months). The recently hatched need a temperature level between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as each week this could be reduced by roughly 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source must be on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your warmth lamp, you have to decrease the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not simply snuggling), you need to add some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is key and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linen commonly as well as always supply clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow quite quick which requires lots of tidy food as well as water. Give enough in any way times and examine usually to avoid thirsty as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that change to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a head start on taking dirt baths, while others won't use up that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Interest and also love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly most likely bond with you as well as not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as view their actions, you can capture health problem or other troubles earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or various other harmful indications. Make sure to likewise take a look at their poop, as diarrhea could bring about matted feathers and clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is important to watch out for social issues, such as the tiniest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathery and also its time for them to leave the security of your house and relocate outside into a cage. Have a look at our section on chicken cages to find out more about cages and also correct cage habitats.
