On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

ILTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Mackinaw Illinois * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Mackinaw Illinois is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Mackinaw, Illinois Baby chicks are quite charming as well as difficult to stand up to, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by gathering not only the right materials, but also the appropriate understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you merely need to give them with the following: A clean as well as warm and comfortable habitat Plenty of food and water Interest and also love Habitat Your environment could be a simple box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (without loosened strings!) to start, and after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of only paper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Also, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the habitat to get them educated on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you have to offer them with a warmth resource. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also function extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can occupy to 2 months). The recently hatched need a temperature level in between 90 and 100 levels, and also each week this can be reduced by around 5 levels approximately. The heat source should get on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your warmth light, you should decrease the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not simply cuddling), you should include some heat. Housekeeping Cleanliness is crucial and it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bedding commonly as well as constantly provide clean food as well as water Food as well as water. Chicks grow very quick which needs lots of tidy food as well as water. Provide enough whatsoever times and check commonly to stop dehydrated and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a slightly reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to get a running start on taking dirt baths, while others won't occupy that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Focus and love There are a couple of benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will probably bond with you as well as not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also view their actions, you could capture ailment or various other issues previously. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or other unhealthy indicators. Make sure to additionally look at their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted plumes and also stopped up cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to watch out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and also move outside right into a cage. Have a look at our area on chicken coops to learn more regarding cages and correct cage environments.
