Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Keithsburg Illinois * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Keithsburg Illinois is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Keithsburg, Illinois Baby chicks are really adorable and difficult to stand up to, yet it's best to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by gathering not only the appropriate products, but also the appropriate understanding to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you simply should offer them with the following: A clean as well as warm environment Lots of food and also water Focus and also love Environment Your environment can be a simple box, aquarium, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (with no loose strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only paper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You also require something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and also a pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you could present a perch into the environment to get them trained on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you should offer them with a heat resource. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise work effectively (my referral). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could occupy to two months). The newly hatched out need a temperature between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as each week this can be decreased by roughly 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source need to be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your warmth light, you need to decrease the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not just snuggling), you need to put some warmth. Housekeeping Cleanliness is essential and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to change the bedding commonly and also constantly supply clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks grow really fast which calls for lots of tidy food and also water. Provide sufficient at all times and check usually to prevent parched and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first two months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a somewhat lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not occupy that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Interest and love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will most likely bond with you and also not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also watch their actions, you could capture health problem or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other harmful indications. Be sure to likewise look at their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted plumes and also clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to look out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick getting teased. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now fully feathery and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and also relocate outside into a coop. Look into our section on chicken cages to get more information regarding cages and also proper cage environments.
