A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Forest Park, Illinois Baby chicks are really charming and difficult to resist, yet it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not only the proper products, however likewise the correct understanding to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you simply need to give them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy environment A lot of food and water Focus and love Habitat Your environment could be an easy box, fish tank, cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing just paper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You likewise need something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you could introduce a perch right into the environment to obtain them educated on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you should give them with a heat resource. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally work effectively (my referral). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The recently hatched require a temperature level between 90 and also 100 degrees, and each week this could be reduced by roughly 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource must get on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you have to lower the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not just curling up), you have to add some warmth. Home cleaning Cleanliness is key and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linen usually and also constantly offer clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand quite quick which requires lots of clean food and also water. Supply enough at all times and also check typically to prevent parched and starving chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the very first two months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to get a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't occupy that task until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Focus and also love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also view their actions, you could capture disease or various other issues previously. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other undesirable signs. Be sure to additionally take a look at their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted plumes and also blocked cloaca. Finally, it is very important to look out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now totally feathered and its time for them to leave the security of your house and also relocate outside into a cage.
