Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Davis Junction, Illinois Baby chicks are quite charming as well as hard to stand up to, yet it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not only the appropriate materials, but additionally the appropriate understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you just need to give them with the following: A tidy and also cozy habitat Lots of food and water Focus as well as love Habitat Your environment can be an easy box, fish tank, pet cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (with no loose strings!) to start, and also after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid using just newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You also require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal store. Additionally, as the chicks age you can present a perch right into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you should give them with a heat resource. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function effectively (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can occupy to 2 months). The recently hatched require a temperature level between 90 as well as 100 degrees, as well as weekly this can be minimized by about 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource must be on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the other edge of your heat light, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not merely snuggling), you have to put some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is crucial and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to alter the bed linens frequently as well as constantly give clean food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow extremely fast which requires plenty of tidy food and water. Offer enough in any way times and also examine commonly to stop thirsty and hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks like to get a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't occupy that task until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Interest and love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will most likely bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also watch their habits, you can catch health problem or other troubles earlier. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indicators. Be sure to additionally take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted plumes and clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to watch out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick getting badgered. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathered as well as its time for them to leave the security of your residence and move outside right into a cage.
