A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Bethalto Illinois * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Bethalto Illinois is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Bethalto, Illinois Baby chicks are really charming and also tough to resist, yet it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the correct products, but likewise the proper expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively simple, you simply have to give them with the following: A clean and also warm environment Plenty of food as well as water Attention as well as love Environment Your environment can be a straightforward box, aquarium, pet cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (with no loose strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You also require something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a pet bird water dispenser from a family pet store. Likewise, as the chicks age you could present a perch into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you should provide them with a heat resource. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise function extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could occupy to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature in between 90 and 100 degrees, as well as every week this could be lowered by roughly 5 degrees or so. The warmth source should be on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are concealing in the other edge of your heat light, you need to decrease the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not simply curling up), you have to include some heat. Housekeeping Tidiness is key as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bedding frequently and also consistently give clean food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow really quickly which calls for lots of tidy food as well as water. Supply enough in any way times as well as examine typically to avoid thirsty as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, then to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking filth baths, while others won't occupy that activity till they are older. If you have the room in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Attention and love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will most likely bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their actions, you can catch illness or various other troubles earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other unhealthy indicators. Be sure to also look at their poop, as diarrhea could result in matted plumes and also stopped up cloaca. Finally, it is necessary to look out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick getting badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathered and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and also move outside into a coop. Take a look at our section on chicken cages to read more about coops and appropriate coop habitats.
