What’s Wrong with My Chickens?

Thanks for stopping by! If you're interested in healthy eating and subscribe to get regular email updates.

I had a recipe to share today, but Elena woke up really early today and changed my usual blogging schedule. But I had a question for any chicken farmers out there. Our chickens have given us no trouble at all, but we have recently noticed them starting to pull out their feathers. We didn’t think too much of it, because it was only here and there. Now they are pulling them out rapidly (this has only happened in the last few days) and they are getting quite scrawny looking. It’s so sad.

What in the world is making them do this?

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Atwood, Illinois Baby chicks are quite adorable and also hard to withstand, but it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not only the appropriate products, yet likewise the appropriate knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you merely should offer them with the following: A clean and also warm and comfortable habitat Lots of food as well as water Focus and also love Environment Your environment could be a basic box, fish tank, pet cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without any loose strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of only paper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You also require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and a family pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you can present a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you have to provide them with a warmth source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb additionally work very well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to 2 months). The freshly hatched require a temperature in between 90 and 100 degrees, and every week this could be decreased by about 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource must get on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat light, you have to decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not just snuggling), you need to include some heat. House cleaning Cleanliness is key and it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linens often as well as constantly provide clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks expand quite quick which needs plenty of clean food as well as water. Provide enough in any way times as well as examine typically to avoid dehydrated as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and it is available in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, then to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dust baths, while others won't use up that activity up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will probably bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their habits, you can capture health problem or other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other undesirable indications. Make sure to likewise look at their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted plumes as well as obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to watch out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick getting picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently fully feathered and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and relocate outside into a cage. Check out our area on chicken coops to read more concerning coops and appropriate cage environments.
