Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Chicken Coop And Run in Springfield, Idaho

Usually these standardized designs are constructed of rapid grown up timber - come the initial decline of rain they swell, leaving you either barricading a door that won't close, or ripping the door furniture off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking inhabitants. The initial warm day suggests the lumber dries out as well as fractures, the really felt roofing bubbles as well as boils, and also come nightfall the hens refuse to enter. This is not due to their frustration at the decrease of their once eye-catching commercial property but considering that the hovel is now a haven for, and also most likely crawling with, the chicken keeper's bane, red mite. Add the fact that it said on the blurb that it would suit four huge hens when that stocking thickness was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also what are you left with? A number of joints as well as some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to four birds ought to cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this could depend upon whether you elect for a complimentary standing house or one with a run affixed. Assuming you are varying your birds in a huge area and the pop hole doorway allows sufficient for the type you maintain, after that the major needs of housing come down to 3 factors which will specify the variety of birds the house will hold; perches, nest boxes and also air flow. A lot of types of chicken will perch when they go to roost in the evening, this perch should ideally be 5-8cm large with smoothed off sides so the foot sits easily on it. The perch needs to be more than the nest box entry as chickens will additionally naturally search for the acme to perch. A perch lower than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is incidentally when they create one of the most poo) causing soiled eggs the list below day. They shouldn't however be so high off the flooring of the house that leg injuries might happen when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens need regarding 20cm of perch each (in little breeds this is clearly less), plus if more than one perch is set up in the house they must be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably the house ought to have a least one nest box for every 3 birds and also these should be off the ground and in the darkest location of the house. Your house ought to have adequate ventilation: without it then condensation will certainly accumulate every night, also in the chilliest of weather. Understand, air flow works with the concept of cozy air leaving through a high void attracting cooler air in from a reduced void - it's not a set of openings on opposite wall surfaces of the house and also at the exact same degree, this is just what's referred to as a draft. If you have a house with a run connected after that the points above are still real, but you must likewise think about the run size. The EU optimum legal stocking density for a cost-free range bird is (and allow's face it, among the motivations for maintaining some hens in the house is possibly enhanced or better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird per 4m squared. Take a close check out some of the deal homes - it could well be your home has the appropriate perches, correct ventilation and sufficient nest boxes for a sensible variety of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the stating goes, "you obtain what you spend for". You might assume you've grabbed a bargain, but you and also your group could rue the day you did. Acquisition the ideal house and it will certainly last for a few years, if not longer provided the correct treatment. Eventually your fowl and your poultry keeping experience will be a lot the better for it.
