Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Thatcher, Idaho Baby chicks are quite adorable as well as hard to resist, however it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by collecting not only the appropriate products, yet additionally the proper expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you just should give them with the following: A clean and also warm environment A lot of food as well as water Focus and also love Environment Your environment could be a basic box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (with no loosened strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You likewise require something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch into the habitat to get them educated on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you should give them with a heat source. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function very well (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can occupy to 2 months). The recently hatched out require a temperature in between 90 and also 100 levels, and every week this could be minimized by around 5 levels or so. The warmth resource need to be on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your heat light, you need to reduce the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not just cuddling), you need to add some heat. Home cleaning Cleanliness is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bedding usually as well as consistently offer tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand very quick which needs lots of clean food and water. Supply sufficient whatsoever times as well as check usually to prevent thirsty and also starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to get a head start on taking dust baths, while others won't take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Focus as well as love There are a couple of benefits to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you as well as not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also watch their actions, you can catch health problem or other problems previously. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or various other unhealthy indications. Make certain to likewise look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted feathers and clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to watch out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently completely feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your house and also relocate outside into a coop.
