New Baby Chicks Have Arrived

I just had to share some pictures of our newest babies.  They are black sexlinks and one golden sexlink.  They are sooo cute.  We just got them yesterday, but they are 10 days old.  Since it has done nothing but rain, 2.75 inches between yesterday and today, they are safe and dry in the garage.  When everything dries out they will go to the outdoor brooder.

I’ll post more pictures as time goes.

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Spirit Lake Idaho * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Spirit Lake, Idaho Baby chicks are extremely adorable and tough to resist, however it's best to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not just the appropriate materials, but also the proper expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you merely have to offer them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy environment Plenty of food and also water Interest and also love Habitat Your habitat could be a straightforward box, fish tank, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loosened strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of only newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise need something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food as well as a pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to offer them with a heat resource. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally work effectively (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can take up to two months). The freshly hatched out need a temperature in between 90 and 100 levels, as well as every week this can be lowered by about 5 levels or so. The heat resource must get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the other edge of your heat lamp, you have to decrease the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you need to put some warmth. House cleaning Tidiness is vital and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to change the bed linen typically as well as constantly provide tidy food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand extremely quickly which calls for a lot of clean food as well as water. Give enough at all times as well as check typically to avoid parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dirt baths, while others will not occupy that activity up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Attention as well as love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will more than likely bond with you and also not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and watch their actions, you can catch illness or various other troubles earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other unhealthy signs. Make sure to likewise consider their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted plumes and also clogged cloaca. Finally, it is very important to look out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently fully feathery and its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as relocate outside into a coop. Look into our area on chicken coops to learn more concerning cages and also proper cage environments.
