What’s Wrong with My Chickens?

Thanks for stopping by! If you're interested in healthy eating and subscribe to get regular email updates.

I had a recipe to share today, but Elena woke up really early today and changed my usual blogging schedule. But I had a question for any chicken farmers out there. Our chickens have given us no trouble at all, but we have recently noticed them starting to pull out their feathers. We didn’t think too much of it, because it was only here and there. Now they are pulling them out rapidly (this has only happened in the last few days) and they are getting quite scrawny looking. It’s so sad.

What in the world is making them do this?

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Blackfoot, Idaho Baby chicks are really cute and also difficult to withstand, yet it's best to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by gathering not just the correct products, yet additionally the proper expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you just need to give them with the following: A clean as well as warm environment Plenty of food as well as water Focus and also love Environment Your habitat could be a simple box, aquarium, cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (without loosened strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing just paper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise need something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you could present a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you should give them with a warmth source. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could use up to two months). The recently hatched out need a temperature level between 90 as well as 100 levels, and also weekly this could be decreased by about 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource ought to get on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are concealing in the other edge of your heat lamp, you have to reduce the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just snuggling), you have to add some warmth. House cleaning Tidiness is vital and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to transform the bed linen often as well as always offer tidy food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks grow very fast which requires lots of clean food and water. Offer sufficient at all times and inspect often to stop parched as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, then change to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking filth baths, while others will not take up that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Focus and also love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will probably bond with you as well as not escape as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and watch their behavior, you can catch disease or various other problems earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or other harmful signs. Make certain to additionally consider their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted feathers and also clogged up cloaca. Lastly, it is necessary to look out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick getting picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your house and move outside into a cage. Have a look at our section on chicken cages for more information concerning coops as well as appropriate cage environments.
