A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

GATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Saint Simons Island Georgia * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Saint Simons Island, Georgia Baby chicks are very charming and also hard to withstand, but it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the appropriate products, however likewise the proper knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably straightforward, you merely need to give them with the following: A tidy and warm habitat Plenty of food as well as water Focus and also love Environment Your environment could be a simple box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (with no loosened strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of only newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You additionally require something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from a pet store. Also, as the chicks age you could introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you have to give them with a warmth source. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function very well (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The freshly hatched out need a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, as well as each week this can be reduced by about 5 levels or so. The warmth source should be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your heat light, you have to lower the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just cuddling), you should add some heat. House cleaning Cleanliness is crucial and it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to alter the bed linens often as well as always offer clean food and also water Food and water. Chicks expand quite fast which needs lots of clean food and also water. Provide sufficient in any way times as well as check commonly to stop dehydrated and starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to get a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not use up that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. First of all, they will most likely bond with you as well as not escape as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also enjoy their behavior, you can catch ailment or other troubles earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or various other unhealthy signs. Make certain to additionally take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can bring about matted plumes and also stopped up cloaca. Lastly, it is essential to keep an eye out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick getting teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathery and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence as well as relocate outside right into a cage.
