A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Edison Georgia * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Edison, Georgia Baby chicks are really charming and hard to withstand, however it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not just the correct products, but likewise the correct knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you just need to provide them with the following: A clean and cozy habitat Plenty of food as well as water Focus and also love Environment Your habitat could be an easy box, fish tank, feline carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loosened strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You additionally require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to supply them with a heat source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function effectively (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can take up to 2 months). The newly hatched need a temperature level between 90 and also 100 levels, and every week this could be minimized by about 5 degrees or so. The heat resource should be on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the other edge of your warmth lamp, you need to reduce the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not just cuddling), you should put some warmth. House cleaning Tidiness is crucial and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to transform the bedding usually and also constantly supply clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks grow really quick which requires a lot of tidy food as well as water. Supply sufficient at all times and examine usually to avoid dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks like to get a head start on taking dust baths, while others will not use up that activity until they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Interest as well as love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly probably bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their actions, you could capture ailment or other troubles earlier. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or various other harmful indicators. Make certain to likewise take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can cause matted feathers and also obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is necessary to keep an eye out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety of your home as well as relocate outside into a coop. Check out our section on chicken coops to read more about cages and also appropriate coop habitats.
