Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

GATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Bremen Georgia * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Bremen Georgia is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Bremen, Georgia Baby chicks are quite adorable and tough to resist, but it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the correct materials, but also the correct expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably straightforward, you merely have to supply them with the following: A tidy and warm environment Lots of food as well as water Interest and love Environment Your habitat could be an easy box, aquarium, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without any loose strings!) to begin, as well as after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of just newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You also require something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks heat you should provide them with a warmth source. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise function effectively (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could use up to 2 months). The newly hatched require a temperature between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also each week this could be decreased by roughly 5 levels or so. The heat source should be on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your warmth lamp, you need to lower the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely curling up), you need to put some warmth. Housekeeping Sanitation is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to alter the bed linen commonly and also constantly give clean food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks expand really fast which requires a lot of tidy food and water. Offer sufficient at all times and also inspect commonly to stop parched and starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and after that to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks want to get a head start on taking dirt baths, while others will not take up that activity until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Focus and love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as see their actions, you can capture ailment or other issues previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or various other unhealthy indicators. Be sure to also take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted plumes and clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to look out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and move outside into a coop. Check out our part on chicken cages for more information about coops and also proper cage environments.
