A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Pomona Park, Florida Baby chicks are really charming and also tough to withstand, yet it's finest to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not only the correct products, but likewise the correct understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you merely need to provide them with the following: A tidy as well as warm habitat Lots of food and water Focus and also love Habitat Your habitat can be a straightforward box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just newspaper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You likewise need something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and also a pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the environment to get them educated on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you have to provide them with a warmth source. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally function effectively (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could use up to 2 months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level between 90 as well as 100 levels, as well as every week this could be decreased by about 5 levels approximately. The heat resource should get on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you should lower the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not merely curling up), you should include some warmth. Housekeeping Cleanliness is crucial and it keeps your chicks healthy. Make certain to change the bed linen frequently and also always offer clean food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks expand quite quick which calls for plenty of clean food and water. Provide enough whatsoever times as well as examine frequently to avoid thirsty and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, then to a somewhat lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks want to obtain a head start on taking dust baths, while others won't use up that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Interest and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly most likely bond with you and not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also see their behavior, you can capture ailment or other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy indicators. Make certain to likewise consider their poop, as diarrhea could result in matted plumes and also clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is necessary to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your home and also relocate outside right into a coop.
