Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Loxahatchee, Florida Baby chicks are extremely cute and tough to resist, but it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the right products, however likewise the correct expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you just should supply them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable habitat A lot of food and water Attention and also love Habitat Your habitat can be an easy box, fish tank, cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without loosened strings!) to start, and after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You additionally require something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from a pet store. Likewise, as the chicks age you could present a perch right into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you should give them with a heat source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb additionally work very well (my suggestion). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could take up to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also every week this can be reduced by roughly 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource need to get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you need to lower the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not merely snuggling), you have to include some warmth. Home cleaning Cleanliness is vital and it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linen usually and also always offer clean food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand very quickly which requires a lot of tidy food and water. Provide enough whatsoever times and also inspect usually to avoid parched as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that change to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't use up that task till they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their behavior, you could capture health problem or various other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or various other unhealthy indications. Be sure to additionally take a look at their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted feathers and also obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is very important to look out for social issues, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and also move outside into a cage.
