We’ve raised four different batches of chicks and this is the year I’ve made an official chick brooder box.  I used the and I was very pleased so I figured I would share my own results.

I’ll give you a basic idea of what I did but please go look at the tutorial because it has very good step by step directions and I want to make sure I give credit where it belongs.  : )

First I cut a rectangle in the top of my plastic tub.  (I used a pocket knife.)  Then I measured my strips of wood and cut them down to the right size.

Next I cut a piece of chicken wire I had left over from the chicken yard.  (I was out of hardware cloth or I would have used it.  My chicks stay indoors so the chicken wire is more to keep them from flying out then as protection from predators).

Then I drilled holes in the ends of my wood and the plastic tub for the bolts to go through.

I threaded the bolts with the chicken wire between the wood and the tub lid and screwed them on with a nut and washer.

Here are some close up pictures of the front and back of the brooder lid:

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Gulf Breeze Florida * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Gulf Breeze Florida is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Gulf Breeze, Florida Baby chicks are really cute as well as hard to resist, but it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by compiling not only the proper materials, yet also the correct understanding to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you merely should provide them with the following: A clean as well as warm environment A lot of food and water Attention and love Environment Your environment could be an easy box, fish tank, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loose strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You also require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Also, as the chicks age you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you should supply them with a warmth source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function effectively (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could take up to two months). The freshly hatched need a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and each week this can be decreased by approximately 5 levels approximately. The heat resource need to get on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat lamp, you should reduce the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just snuggling), you need to put some heat. House cleaning Cleanliness is crucial and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to transform the bed linens often and always supply clean food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks expand really quickly which requires plenty of tidy food as well as water. Offer enough whatsoever times and examine typically to avoid thirsty as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first two months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to get a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't take up that activity until they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Interest and love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will most likely bond with you as well as not escape as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as enjoy their actions, you can catch health problem or various other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or various other undesirable signs. Make certain to also take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can lead to matted feathers and also stopped up cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to watch out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathery and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and also relocate outside right into a cage. Check out our section on chicken cages for more information regarding cages as well as appropriate coop habitats.
