A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Crawfordville, Florida Baby chicks are quite charming and also challenging to stand up to, yet it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by collecting not just the proper materials, yet also the appropriate expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you merely should offer them with the following: A tidy as well as warm habitat Lots of food as well as water Focus as well as love Habitat Your environment can be a simple box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (with no loose strings!) to begin, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise require something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a pet store. Likewise, as the chicks age you can present a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you have to offer them with a heat resource. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally function very well (my suggestion). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could occupy to two months). The freshly hatched need a temperature between 90 as well as 100 degrees, as well as each week this can be minimized by approximately 5 degrees approximately. The heat resource should get on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your heat lamp, you should lower the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you should include some heat. Home cleaning Cleanliness is essential as well as it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to change the bed linens usually as well as always provide tidy food and also water Food and also water. Chicks grow very fast which needs plenty of clean food and water. Give enough at all times as well as check frequently to avoid parched and hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking filth baths, while others will not take up that activity until they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Attention and also love There are a few benefits to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly most likely bond with you and also not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as watch their actions, you could capture health problem or other issues earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other undesirable indicators. Make certain to likewise consider their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted feathers and clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to look out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety and security of your house as well as relocate outside into a coop. Have a look at our section on chicken cages to get more information regarding coops and proper cage environments.
