On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Cedar Key, Florida Baby chicks are very cute and hard to resist, however it's finest to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by gathering not just the right products, however additionally the proper expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you merely need to give them with the following: A tidy and also warm habitat A lot of food and water Focus and also love Habitat Your habitat could be a simple box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without any loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks use straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of only paper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You additionally need something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you can present a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you need to give them with a heat source. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally function extremely well (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to 2 months). The newly hatched out need a temperature in between 90 and 100 levels, and also each week this could be minimized by roughly 5 degrees approximately. The warmth resource should be on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your warmth light, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you have to include some heat. House cleaning Sanitation is essential as well as it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bedding usually and also consistently provide clean food and water Food and also water. Chicks grow really fast which requires plenty of tidy food and also water. Offer sufficient whatsoever times as well as inspect often to avoid parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others will not occupy that activity until they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Attention and love There are a few benefits to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you and not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also watch their behavior, you can catch illness or various other problems previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other undesirable signs. Make sure to likewise consider their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted plumes and clogged cloaca. Finally, it is very important to watch out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick getting picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence as well as move outside into a coop. Check out our section on chicken coops to read more about cages as well as appropriate cage habitats.
