Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Lincoln, Delaware Baby chicks are very cute and hard to resist, however it's best to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the proper materials, however additionally the appropriate expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you merely need to provide them with the following: A clean and cozy environment Plenty of food and water Focus and love Environment Your habitat can be a simple box, fish tank, cat provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loose strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just paper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise need something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can present a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you need to supply them with a heat source. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb also function very well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can take up to two months). The newly hatched need a temperature between 90 and also 100 levels, and also each week this could be minimized by around 5 degrees approximately. The heat resource should get on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your heat lamp, you need to minimize the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not simply curling up), you have to put some heat. House cleaning Cleanliness is essential and also it keeps your chicks healthy. Make certain to transform the bed linens usually and consistently supply clean food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks expand very fast which requires a lot of clean food and water. Offer enough in any way times and also check often to avoid dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and it comes in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, then to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to get a running start on taking dust baths, while others will not use up that activity till they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Interest and love There are a few advantages to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will probably bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and see their habits, you can capture health problem or other troubles previously. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or various other undesirable indicators. Make certain to additionally consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted plumes and blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the littlest chick getting teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathered and its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as relocate outside right into a cage. Take a look at our part on chicken cages to find out more about cages and also appropriate coop environments.
