Goodness, Gracious, Great Balls of Fluff

We did it. Brian & I are chick parents, and they’re adorable little fuzz balls. Here’s a short video of them at 3 days old. (Listen close for their tiny peep noises – too cute!)

, but they will be living in our house in a cardboard box for a few more weeks, enjoying a heat lamp. It’s too cold outside for them right now.

Ingredients for New Chick Parents

Here are the essentials to create happy chicks in a box:

  • wood chips or straw
  • water container
  • food container
  • chick starter feed
  • heat lamp
  • chicks
  • a box

Here’s our setup in action. It’s pretty simple but effective.

Sleeping or Dead?

Each morning, before I even pee or make a pot of coffee, I check the box to make sure I still have the right number of babies and they’re all still alive. (I can only assume all mothers do this.)

I’ve discovered the chicks like to play a game I call, “sleeping or dead?” So far, it’s been sleeping every time, but I’ll let you be the judge. Who says chickens don’t have a sense of humor?

And here’s another. Dead or sleeping?

Maximum Chick Comfort

As good chick parents, Brian & I have been trying to learn their personalities and figure out how to give them a better box environment. The wood chips we bought are pretty big; we were concerned the chips were uncomfortable on their tiny feet, so we decided to conduct an experiment.

I laid an old t-shirt down in part of the box to see if the chicks preferred to walk/sleep on the shirt rather than the wood chips. Turns out, chicks really don’t give a cluck.

Everyone Loves Baby Chicks

Here are a few more “awwwwww” worthy pictures of fuzzy 3-day-old chicks. Please enjoy for now, and there will definitely be more to come!

CTTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Terryville Connecticut * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Terryville Connecticut * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Baby Chicks Not Eating in Terryville, Connecticut

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Terryville Connecticut is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Terryville, Connecticut Baby chicks are very cute and also hard to resist, but it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by gathering not just the appropriate materials, yet likewise the appropriate knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you merely have to supply them with the following: A tidy and cozy environment Plenty of food and also water Attention as well as love Environment Your habitat could be a simple box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loosened strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only newspaper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You additionally require something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from a family pet store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks warm you need to supply them with a warmth resource. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally work extremely well (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can use up to two months). The recently hatched out require a temperature between 90 and 100 levels, and every week this could be decreased by about 5 degrees or so. The warmth source should be on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you have to decrease the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you have to put some warmth. Home cleaning Sanitation is vital as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to alter the bed linens commonly and also constantly provide tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow very quickly which calls for plenty of tidy food as well as water. Supply sufficient at all times and also inspect commonly to prevent dehydrated and starving chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to obtain a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't use up that task up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Focus and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly probably bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also view their habits, you can catch health problem or other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indicators. Make certain to likewise look at their poop, as diarrhea can bring about matted plumes and obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathery and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and also move outside into a cage. Check out our area on chicken cages to find out more concerning cages as well as correct cage environments.
