Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Winter Park Colorado is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Winter Park, Colorado Baby chicks are very cute and tough to withstand, but it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by gathering not only the right products, but likewise the proper understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you merely need to provide them with the following: A tidy and cozy environment Lots of food and also water Focus as well as love Habitat Your environment can be a basic box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only paper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You likewise require something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet store. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch right into the environment to get them trained on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you need to offer them with a heat resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also work very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could use up to 2 months). The recently hatched need a temperature level between 90 as well as 100 levels, and also each week this can be lowered by roughly 5 levels approximately. The heat source need to be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your heat lamp, you need to reduce the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not simply snuggling), you should put some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is essential and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to alter the bed linen typically and also always provide tidy food as well as water Food as well as water. Chicks grow extremely fast which calls for lots of tidy food as well as water. Provide enough in any way times as well as examine commonly to avoid thirsty and hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and it comes in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first two months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Focus and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will most likely bond with you and also not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their habits, you could capture ailment or various other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other undesirable signs. Make certain to likewise check out their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted feathers as well as obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is essential to look out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick getting teased. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathered and its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as relocate outside right into a coop. Have a look at our area on chicken cages for more information regarding coops and also correct cage habitats.
