We’ve raised four different batches of chicks and this is the year I’ve made an official chick brooder box.  I used the and I was very pleased so I figured I would share my own results.

I’ll give you a basic idea of what I did but please go look at the tutorial because it has very good step by step directions and I want to make sure I give credit where it belongs.  : )

First I cut a rectangle in the top of my plastic tub.  (I used a pocket knife.)  Then I measured my strips of wood and cut them down to the right size.

Next I cut a piece of chicken wire I had left over from the chicken yard.  (I was out of hardware cloth or I would have used it.  My chicks stay indoors so the chicken wire is more to keep them from flying out then as protection from predators).

Then I drilled holes in the ends of my wood and the plastic tub for the bolts to go through.

I threaded the bolts with the chicken wire between the wood and the tub lid and screwed them on with a nut and washer.

Here are some close up pictures of the front and back of the brooder lid:

COTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Paradox Colorado * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Paradox Colorado * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Paradox Colorado is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Paradox, Colorado Baby chicks are very charming as well as difficult to resist, yet it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by collecting not only the correct materials, yet also the proper understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you merely should supply them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable environment A lot of food and also water Attention and love Environment Your environment can be an easy box, aquarium, pet cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without any loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You likewise require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Also, as the chicks age you can present a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you need to give them with a heat source. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise function extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to two months). The freshly hatched need a temperature level between 90 and 100 degrees, and weekly this could be minimized by approximately 5 degrees or so. The heat resource need to get on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat light, you should decrease the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just curling up), you should put some warmth. Housekeeping Cleanliness is vital and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to alter the bed linens often as well as constantly provide clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks grow very fast which calls for a lot of tidy food as well as water. Supply sufficient in any way times as well as inspect often to prevent parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to get a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not use up that activity up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Attention as well as love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly probably bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and enjoy their actions, you could catch illness or various other troubles previously. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy indications. Be sure to also look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted feathers and stopped up cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to watch out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently fully feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your home and also relocate outside into a coop. Take a look at our area on chicken cages to find out more about coops and also proper cage habitats.
