Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Cotopaxi, Colorado Baby chicks are really cute and also challenging to resist, however it's best to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by gathering not only the appropriate materials, however additionally the correct understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you just need to offer them with the following: A tidy and warm habitat A lot of food and water Interest and also love Habitat Your environment could be a straightforward box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (with no loosened strings!) to start, and also after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only newspaper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You likewise require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you could present a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you should give them with a warmth source. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also work very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could take up to 2 months). The newly hatched out need a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as each week this could be decreased by about 5 levels or so. The heat resource ought to be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the other edge of your heat lamp, you should decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you need to put some heat. House cleaning Sanitation is vital and also it keeps your chicks healthy. Make sure to alter the bed linens usually as well as always offer tidy food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks expand quite quickly which calls for lots of tidy food and also water. Offer enough whatsoever times and also inspect frequently to prevent thirsty and hungry chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, then to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks want to get a running start on taking dust baths, while others won't occupy that task until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Attention as well as love There are a couple of benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly probably bond with you and not escape as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also view their behavior, you can capture ailment or other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other unhealthy indicators. Be sure to also look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could result in matted feathers as well as obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is necessary to watch out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathered and its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as move outside right into a coop.
