A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

CATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Tustin California * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Tustin California is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Tustin, California Baby chicks are very adorable as well as challenging to withstand, but it's finest to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not only the right materials, yet additionally the correct expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you merely should give them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable environment Lots of food and also water Focus and love Environment Your habitat could be a simple box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without any loosened strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using just newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You also need something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal store. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can present a perch right into the environment to get them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you need to offer them with a heat resource. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function very well (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could take up to 2 months). The newly hatched need a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also every week this can be minimized by around 5 degrees or so. The heat source need to get on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the other edge of your heat lamp, you should minimize the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you should add some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is vital and it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to alter the bed linen frequently and also constantly provide tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand really quick which requires plenty of tidy food and also water. Provide sufficient in any way times and also examine typically to stop dehydrated and hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a somewhat lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't take up that activity until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Attention as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will more than likely bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also enjoy their behavior, you can capture health problem or other problems earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other unhealthy signs. Make certain to likewise consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted plumes and also clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is necessary to watch out for social issues, such as the littlest chick getting teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathery and its time for them to leave the security of your house and also move outside right into a coop. Look into our part on chicken cages for more information regarding cages and correct coop habitats.
