On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

CATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Igo California * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Igo California * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Igo California is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Igo, California Baby chicks are quite cute and difficult to resist, yet it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not only the appropriate products, yet also the proper expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you merely should supply them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy habitat A lot of food and water Focus and also love Environment Your environment could be an easy box, aquarium, pet cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (with no loose strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid making use of only newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You additionally need something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the environment to get them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you have to give them with a warmth resource. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally function very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can occupy to two months). The newly hatched out require a temperature in between 90 and 100 levels, as well as weekly this could be reduced by approximately 5 degrees approximately. The heat source should get on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the other edge of your warmth lamp, you should decrease the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not simply curling up), you should add some heat. Home cleaning Tidiness is essential as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bed linen typically and consistently supply clean food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks grow really quickly which requires plenty of clean food and water. Supply enough whatsoever times and also check usually to prevent dehydrated and hungry chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to get a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not occupy that task up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Attention and also love There are a few advantages to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will more than likely bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also view their behavior, you could capture ailment or other troubles earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other undesirable indications. Make certain to likewise look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted feathers and also obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to look out for social issues, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now fully feathery and also its time for them to leave the security of your home as well as relocate outside into a coop. Take a look at our section on chicken coops to read more concerning cages and appropriate cage environments.
