We’ve raised four different batches of chicks and this is the year I’ve made an official chick brooder box.  I used the and I was very pleased so I figured I would share my own results.

I’ll give you a basic idea of what I did but please go look at the tutorial because it has very good step by step directions and I want to make sure I give credit where it belongs.  : )

First I cut a rectangle in the top of my plastic tub.  (I used a pocket knife.)  Then I measured my strips of wood and cut them down to the right size.

Next I cut a piece of chicken wire I had left over from the chicken yard.  (I was out of hardware cloth or I would have used it.  My chicks stay indoors so the chicken wire is more to keep them from flying out then as protection from predators).

Then I drilled holes in the ends of my wood and the plastic tub for the bolts to go through.

I threaded the bolts with the chicken wire between the wood and the tub lid and screwed them on with a nut and washer.

Here are some close up pictures of the front and back of the brooder lid:

CATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Dos Rios California * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Dos Rios California * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Dos Rios California is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Dos Rios, California Baby chicks are extremely adorable as well as hard to stand up to, yet it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not only the right materials, however also the appropriate expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you simply have to supply them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable environment A lot of food as well as water Interest and also love Habitat Your environment could be a basic box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without any loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You additionally need something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and an animal bird water dispenser from an animal store. Likewise, as the chicks age you could present a perch right into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you need to offer them with a warmth resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also work effectively (my suggestion). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can occupy to 2 months). The newly hatched need a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, as well as weekly this can be lowered by roughly 5 degrees approximately. The warmth resource must get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your warmth lamp, you have to reduce the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not just curling up), you need to put some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is essential as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to transform the bedding commonly and always provide tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow extremely quickly which calls for lots of tidy food and also water. Provide enough whatsoever times and examine usually to stop parched as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to get a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not occupy that activity till they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Attention and also love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will more than likely bond with you as well as not flee as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also enjoy their habits, you can catch health problem or various other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy indicators. Make sure to also consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted feathers and also stopped up cloaca. Finally, it is very important to look out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently completely feathered and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your house as well as relocate outside into a cage. Check out our section on chicken cages for more information regarding cages and proper cage habitats.
