The Chicken Coop Saga

Justin had big plans for our chicken coop. When I say “big plans,” I mean a chicken coop that Justin probably could have lived in when he has free time. Seriously, his plans were larger than our Kia Soul. Considering that Justin works five days a week and we have church twice on Sunday, we don’t have a lot of time for construction. We also don’t have a truck, so our ability to purchase coop supplies is limited.

Today, at Lowe’s, Justin also realized something important: the supplies for a chicken coop are fairly expensive. Despite his seventh grade woodshop class and his natural knack for carpentry, it looked like we were getting in over our heads. Then, Tractor Supply saved the day.

It’s “chick days” at Tractor Supply, which means chickens and supplies are on sale and in stock. So, we headed down the road to TSC.

For only $250 (half the price of Justin’s Chicken McMansion), we were able to get a chicken starter kit (includes a waterer, feeder, chick food, a chick corral, and coupons), chicken feed, and a coop. The best part? The coop only took Justin an hour to make. We could have probably shaved some time off that, but we had a cat leak from inside the house and had to chase a cat across the yard as she made a mad dash for freedom.

The coop comes in several pieces, and has easy to follow instructions. Luckily for us, Justin is the type of guy who will actually go by the instructions in the box, which made things a lot easier. Still, had he been the type to wing it, he probably still could have finished it in two or so hours.

The coop is about the right size for 3 to 4 full grown hens, and includes a laying box that can be closed off. Available for separate purchase is an extension to allow the chickens to roam. Our chickens will be able to walk the backyard during the day, so this wasn’t necessary for us, but my dad will be purchasing one for his coop sometime soon.

All in all, while I’m sorry that Justin didn’t get the chance to build his Chicken McMansion, I’m glad we went the way we did. This was a lot easier, faster, and got our chickens into our backyard faster!

Chicken Coop With Run in Glenwood, Arkansas

More often than not these mass produced designs are created of quick grown lumber - come the initial decrease of rain they swell, leaving you either defending a doorway that will not shut, or ripping the door furnishings off in a vain effort to release the squawking inhabitants. The first warm and comfortable day implies the lumber dries as well as cracks, the felt roofing system bubbles as well as boils, and also come nightfall the hens choose not to go in. This is not due to their frustration at the decrease of their once desirable residential property but because the hovel is currently a sanctuary for, and also possibly abounding, the fowl keeper's bane, red mite. Add on that it said on the blurb that it would suit four large chickens when that equipping density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you left with? A couple of joints as well as some kindling. A decent coop for thee to four birds need to cost you around ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you elect for a cost-free standing house or one with a run affixed. Assuming you are ranging your birds in a big space as well as the pop opening door allows enough for the breed you maintain, then the major requirements of housing boil down to three factors which will specify the number of birds your house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and ventilation. Many types of chicken will perch when they visit roost in the evening, this perch ought to preferably be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off sides so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch should be more than the nest box entrance as chickens will certainly likewise naturally seek the highest point to perch. A perch less than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is incidentally when they produce the most poo) leading to soiled eggs the list below day. They shouldn't nevertheless be so high off the floor of your home that leg injuries could possibly occur when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens require concerning 20cm of perch each (in small types this is undoubtedly much less), plus if greater than one perch is mounted in your home they should be more than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Preferably your home must have a the very least one nest box for every single three birds as well as these need to be off the ground and also in the darkest area of your home. Your house needs to have adequate air flow: without it then condensation will certainly accumulate every night, also in the chilliest of climate. Know, ventilation works with the principle of warm air leaving with a high space drawing cooler air in from a lower space - it's not a set of holes on contrary wall surfaces of the house and at the exact same level, this is what's known as a draft. If you have a house with a run attached then the factors above are still real, yet you must likewise consider the run size. The EU optimum lawful equipping thickness for a cost-free array bird is (and also let's face it, among the inspirations for keeping some chickens in the house is perhaps enhanced or better well-being) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's optimal one bird each 4m settled. Take a close take a look at some of the bargain homes - it could well be the house has the appropriate perches, right ventilation and also enough nest boxes for a sensible variety of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized item of ground to invest the day on? Therefore as the claiming goes, "you get just what you spend for". You could believe you've got hold of a deal, however you as well as your group can rue the day you did. Purchase the appropriate house as well as it will last for a few years, otherwise longer given the correct therapy. Ultimately your chicken and also your poultry keeping encounter will be a lot the far better for it.
