A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Prairie Grove, Arkansas Baby chicks are extremely cute and hard to stand up to, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by compiling not just the appropriate materials, yet also the proper understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you just should offer them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy environment Lots of food and also water Attention and love Environment Your environment can be a basic box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without loosened strings!) to start, and also after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just paper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You additionally require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and a pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Also, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the environment to get them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks heat you need to provide them with a heat source. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally function very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can use up to two months). The freshly hatched out require a temperature between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also every week this could be lowered by about 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource must get on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your heat light, you need to lower the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just snuggling), you should add some warmth. Home cleaning Tidiness is key as well as it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linens usually as well as constantly give tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow extremely fast which requires plenty of clean food and water. Supply sufficient whatsoever times and inspect typically to prevent thirsty and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking dirt baths, while others will not use up that task up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Focus as well as love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will more than likely bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and enjoy their actions, you can capture health problem or other problems previously. Watch out for hissing, limping, or various other unhealthy indications. Make sure to additionally consider their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted feathers as well as clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is necessary to look out for social issues, such as the smallest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and relocate outside right into a cage. Take a look at our part on chicken coops to get more information regarding coops and appropriate cage environments.
