Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Luxora, Arkansas Baby chicks are very cute and also tough to withstand, but it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not only the appropriate products, yet likewise the appropriate knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you just have to provide them with the following: A tidy and also warm habitat A lot of food and also water Interest and also love Habitat Your habitat can be an easy box, aquarium, cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without loose strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You additionally require something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from an animal store. Likewise, as the chicks age you can introduce a perch right into the environment to get them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you need to provide them with a heat source. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally work very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can occupy to two months). The recently hatched out need a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as weekly this can be lowered by roughly 5 degrees approximately. The warmth resource should be on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you should minimize the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not just snuggling), you should add some warmth. Home cleaning Sanitation is essential as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bed linen often and always offer tidy food and water Food and water. Chicks grow quite quick which calls for a lot of tidy food and also water. Offer enough whatsoever times and examine frequently to avoid parched and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't use up that task until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will more than likely bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their actions, you can capture disease or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy indications. Make certain to additionally take a look at their poop, as diarrhea could lead to matted plumes and also clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is important to look out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as relocate outside right into a coop. Look into our section on chicken cages to find out more about coops and appropriate cage habitats.
