A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Dennard Arkansas * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Dennard Arkansas is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Dennard, Arkansas Baby chicks are very charming and also hard to withstand, yet it's best to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by compiling not only the appropriate products, yet additionally the appropriate knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you merely should offer them with the following: A clean as well as cozy habitat A lot of food and also water Attention and love Environment Your environment can be a basic box, aquarium, cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (without loose strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid using just paper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You likewise need something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the environment to get them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you should give them with a warmth resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb additionally work effectively (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to 2 months). The newly hatched need a temperature level in between 90 and 100 degrees, and also weekly this could be minimized by roughly 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource ought to be on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your heat light, you should decrease the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you should add some heat. Home cleaning Sanitation is vital and also it keeps your chicks healthy. Make sure to alter the bedding frequently and also always give clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow really fast which calls for plenty of clean food and also water. Supply enough whatsoever times and check often to stop dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks want to obtain a head start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't take up that activity till they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Focus and love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly probably bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and watch their actions, you can catch health problem or various other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy signs. Make certain to also look at their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted feathers as well as blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to watch out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and move outside right into a cage. Look into our area on chicken cages to read more regarding coops and also correct cage environments.
