On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Cotton Plant, Arkansas Baby chicks are extremely adorable and also difficult to withstand, but it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by gathering not just the right materials, however additionally the correct expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you merely should provide them with the following: A clean and also warm and comfortable habitat Plenty of food and also water Interest and love Habitat Your habitat can be a basic box, aquarium, pet cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loose strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of just newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You additionally require something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and a family pet bird water dispenser from a family pet store. Also, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch right into the environment to get them educated on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you have to provide them with a heat resource. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also work very well (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to 2 months). The recently hatched out need a temperature between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as every week this can be reduced by approximately 5 degrees approximately. The heat source need to be on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary edge of your warmth lamp, you need to lower the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not simply curling up), you should add some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is crucial and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to alter the bed linen often and always provide clean food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow very quick which requires a lot of tidy food and also water. Offer enough in any way times and also examine typically to prevent dehydrated and hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first two months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking filth baths, while others will not take up that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Focus and love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will probably bond with you and not escape as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as enjoy their actions, you could capture ailment or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other harmful indicators. Make certain to likewise consider their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted feathers and also blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to look out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick getting badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your house as well as move outside into a cage. Check out our area on chicken cages to read more concerning coops and also appropriate cage habitats.
