Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Cottonwood Arizona * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Cottonwood Arizona is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Cottonwood, Arizona Baby chicks are very charming as well as tough to resist, but it's best to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by gathering not only the proper products, however also the correct knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you just have to supply them with the following: A clean and cozy habitat Plenty of food as well as water Attention and love Habitat Your habitat can be a simple box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (without loosened strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks use straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just paper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You likewise need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch into the habitat to get them educated on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you need to give them with a heat source. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb likewise work very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The freshly hatched out require a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 levels, and also every week this could be minimized by around 5 degrees approximately. The heat resource should get on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your warmth lamp, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not just cuddling), you need to add some heat. House cleaning Cleanliness is key and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to transform the bedding frequently and also consistently give clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks expand really fast which requires a lot of tidy food as well as water. Offer sufficient whatsoever times and check typically to prevent dehydrated and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to get a head start on taking dust baths, while others won't occupy that activity until they are older. If you have the room in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Interest and love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. Firstly, they will more than likely bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and view their actions, you could capture illness or other issues previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other undesirable indicators. Make sure to likewise take a look at their poop, as diarrhea can bring about matted plumes and clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is very important to watch out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as move outside right into a cage. Have a look at our section on chicken coops to get more information regarding cages and also proper cage environments.
