Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Chicken Coop Cheap in Delta Junction, Alaska

Most of the time these standardized models are constructed of quick grown up timber - come the initial drop of rainfall they swell, leaving you either blockading a door that will not close, or ripping the doorway furniture off in a vain attempt to release the squawking occupants. The first warm day suggests the timber dries out and also cracks, the really felt roofing bubbles as well as boils, and also come nightfall the chickens refuse to go in. This is not due to their disappointment at the decrease of their once appealing property but due to the fact that the hovel is currently a sanctuary for, and also possibly abounding, the poultry caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add that it claimed on the blurb that it would certainly match 4 big chickens when that stocking density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also exactly what are you left with? A few joints and also some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to four birds must cost you around ₤ 300 though this could rely on whether you elect for a totally free standing house or one with a run attached. Thinking you are ranging your birds in a large area and also the pop opening door is big enough for the type you keep, then the main demands of real estate boil down to 3 points which will specify the variety of birds your house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and ventilation. Most breeds of chicken will perch when they go to roost in the evening, this perch ought to preferably be 5-8cm large with smoothed off edges so the foot rests easily on it. The perch ought to be more than the nest box access as chickens will additionally normally seek the highest point to perch. A perch below that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they generate one of the most poo) leading to dirtied eggs the list below day. They shouldn't however be so high off the floor of your home that leg injuries can occur when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens need concerning 20cm of perch each (in little types this is clearly less), plus if more than one perch is set up in the house they must be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Ideally your home ought to have a least one nest box for every single three birds as well as these must be off the ground and also in the darkest area of your house. The house must have appropriate air flow: without it then condensation will develop every evening, also in the coldest of weather condition. Be aware, ventilation deals with the principle of warm air leaving with a high gap attracting cooler air in from a lower gap - it's not a collection of openings on other wall surfaces of your home and at the same level, this is just what's called a draft. If you have a house with a run affixed then the factors above are still real, but you ought to also take into consideration the run size. The EU optimum legal stocking density for a free range bird is (as well as let's face it, one of the motivations for keeping some hens in your home is potentially improved or better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m settled. Take a close check out some of the bargain houses - it could well be your home has the appropriate perches, right air flow and also enough nest boxes for a reasonable variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to invest the day on? And so as the saying goes, "you get what you spend for". You might think you've got a bargain, but you and your group could possibly rue the day you did. Acquisition the right house as well as it will last for a couple of years, otherwise longer given the proper treatment. In the long run your poultry as well as your chicken maintaining experience will certainly be a lot the better for it.
