My boys are picking up chicks.
Who could blame them? They're cute!
Picking up the human kinds of chicks will happen soon enough, but for now, I'm referring to the feathered kinds. I am so happy that my kids are so excited about these baby chickens. We have waited for 21 days, while the eggs slowly grew life inside of them in the in our bathroom. After all the waiting, pipping (the start of a hole) is an exciting sight:
Watching chicks hatch from an egg is a trip. It's such hard work for these poor little, wet, dinosaur-looking creatures, that when they finally break out of the shell, they often just pass out for a minute. With their mohawks sticking straight up, they rest their tiny little head on the shell of a not-yet-hatched sibling. And then they start up again, frantically trying to sort out how their legs work.
It takes them a while to dry out, but when they do - oh my! Cuter fluff balls don't exist in the animal kingdom.
My children agree. In fact, little Eva has taken on the role of mothering the tiny chicks, carefully holding them in her hands, offering them bits of food. The chicks already follow her around, or fall asleep in her warm hands.
Other exciting news: Steve and I attended the Skagit Land Trust Fundraiser and Auction a few nights ago, and we bid on a inflatable Kayak that's worth $900. We won with a bid of $300, so we are pleased as can be. We took it out for a test float with our friends the other morning. There are not many prettier lakes than Diablo Lake, and although we got rained on, we all had fun.
I foresee many adventures in this Kayak! It's super easy to set up and take down, and it's light, and sturdy, and perfect in every way. Yes, I'm in love.Let me leave you with images from a walk to our neighborhood creek, and lastly, Luke playing his guitar in the yard, with a stage to match. Ahem.

Levelock, Alaska
Thumbing through a baby chickens for sale in Levelock Alaska
catalog is a yearly traditions in many houses. My kids and I eagerly await
the Murray McMurray Hatchery catalog. We love looking at all the cool and
different chicken breeds available. Catalogs are free so head on over to
their site and request one if you are interested.
Typically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds
and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs
that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2
pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros
and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in
Levelock Alaska * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large
variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best
selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens
available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of
both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money
and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose
all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on
chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the
breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Levelock
Alaska * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell
out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you
are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall
before their orders sell out.

Levelock, Alaska
Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries
will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is
necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put
in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce
enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to
buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you
choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship
and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in
Levelock Alaska is easy and has always been a very pleasant
experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks
but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all
those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait
was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Levelock,
Alaska Baby chicks are extremely
cute as well as
tough to resist,
yet it's best to plan for their
arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first
by collecting not only the
right products, but
additionally the proper
expertise to take care of
them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably
easy, you simply need
to offer them with the following: A tidy as well as warm
habitat Lots of food and water Interest and
love Habitat Your environment could be an easy box, aquarium,
cat provider, or guinea
porker cage. Line it with old towels and
blankets (with no loosened
strings!) to start, and after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper.
Keep in mind: Avoid using just
paper or other slipper
surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow
misshapen. You additionally require
something to provide food as well as
water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water
recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar
cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a pet store. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch
into the habitat to obtain them
educated on setting down. Warmth To
keep your chicks warm you should
give them with a heat source.
This could be as easy as a 100 watt
light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a
hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth
light bulb likewise function extremely well (my
suggestion). Chicks require this
heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is
replaced with feathers (which can use
up to two months). The freshly
hatched out require a temperature
in between 90 as well as 100 degrees,
and also each week this can
be lowered by
about 5 levels approximately. The warmth source must get on simply one side of the cage
to allow chicks an array of
temperature levels. The chicks are your finest
thermometer- if they are concealing in the
other edge of your heat
light, you need to
minimize the temperature. If
they are surrounding each various other under the
heat (not simply snuggling),
you have to put some warmth.
House cleaning
Sanitation is key as
well as it keeps your chicks healthy and
balanced. Make certain to transform
the bed linen
commonly and
consistently provide tidy
food as well as water Food as well as water.
Chicks grow very quickly
which requires a lot of clean
food as well as water. Give
enough whatsoever times and also examine
commonly to avoid dehydrated and also
starving chicks. Chick food is various compared
to grown-up chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the
first two months, after that
change to a grower food (~ 17 %
protein) for an additional 2 months,
and after that to a somewhat
lower protein feed or a layer feed
(if you have levels). Soil Some chicks want
to obtain a head start on taking
dirt bathrooms, while others will not occupy that activity until they are
older. If you have the area in your chick
unit, introduce a tray of sand or
filth for them to bathe in.
Focus and also love There are a couple of benefits to hanging
out with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly most
likely bond with you and also
not flee as grownups. Second, if you
examine your chicks daily and
view their actions, you could
catch health problem or various
other issues earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or
various other unhealthy
indicators. Make certain to
additionally take a look at
their poop, as looseness of the bowels could result in matted plumes as well
as stopped up cloaca.
Lastly, it is very
important to look out
for social issues, such as the
tiniest chick getting picked
on. Empty nest syndrome So your
chicks are now fully feathered
as well as its time for them to leave the
security of your home
and relocate outside into a
coop. Check out our
area on chicken cages for more information
regarding coops as well as
proper coop habitats.
