We’ve raised four different batches of chicks and this is the year I’ve made an official chick brooder box.  I used the and I was very pleased so I figured I would share my own results.

I’ll give you a basic idea of what I did but please go look at the tutorial because it has very good step by step directions and I want to make sure I give credit where it belongs.  : )

First I cut a rectangle in the top of my plastic tub.  (I used a pocket knife.)  Then I measured my strips of wood and cut them down to the right size.

Next I cut a piece of chicken wire I had left over from the chicken yard.  (I was out of hardware cloth or I would have used it.  My chicks stay indoors so the chicken wire is more to keep them from flying out then as protection from predators).

Then I drilled holes in the ends of my wood and the plastic tub for the bolts to go through.

I threaded the bolts with the chicken wire between the wood and the tub lid and screwed them on with a nut and washer.

Here are some close up pictures of the front and back of the brooder lid:

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Forest Home Alabama * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Forest Home, Alabama Baby chicks are really charming as well as challenging to stand up to, however it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by gathering not only the right products, but likewise the proper understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably straightforward, you merely should provide them with the following: A clean and also cozy environment A lot of food and also water Interest as well as love Environment Your habitat could be a simple box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (with no loose strings!) to start, and after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only paper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You likewise require something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you should supply them with a heat source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function effectively (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could occupy to 2 months). The newly hatched require a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, as well as each week this can be minimized by around 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource need to be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your warmth light, you should lower the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just curling up), you need to include some warmth. House cleaning Tidiness is vital and also it keeps your chicks healthy. Make certain to change the bed linen typically and also consistently provide tidy food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow really fast which requires plenty of tidy food and also water. Give sufficient in any way times and also check frequently to prevent parched and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, and it comes in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks like to get a running start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't use up that task up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Focus and also love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will probably bond with you and not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and view their habits, you can capture disease or various other issues earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or other undesirable indications. Be sure to also consider their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted plumes and stopped up cloaca. Finally, it is essential to look out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and also relocate outside right into a coop.
