On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Castleberry Alabama is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Castleberry, Alabama Baby chicks are very cute as well as tough to withstand, yet it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not only the correct materials, however likewise the proper knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly basic, you merely have to supply them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable habitat Plenty of food and water Focus and love Habitat Your habitat could be an easy box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only paper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You likewise require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you should supply them with a heat source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also work very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can use up to two months). The recently hatched out need a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also each week this can be minimized by about 5 levels approximately. The heat source ought to be on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your warmth light, you have to decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you should include some heat. House cleaning Cleanliness is key and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to alter the bed linens often as well as constantly offer tidy food as well as water Food as well as water. Chicks expand quite quickly which requires plenty of tidy food and water. Offer enough whatsoever times and also inspect typically to avoid thirsty and also starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking dirt baths, while others won't occupy that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Interest as well as love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly probably bond with you as well as not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as enjoy their actions, you could catch illness or various other troubles earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other harmful indicators. Make certain to also consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted plumes and obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to look out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick getting teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathery as well as its time for them to leave the security of your home and relocate outside right into a coop. Have a look at our section on chicken cages to read more about coops and also appropriate coop environments.
